LA CROSSE, Wisc. – The increase in COVID-19 cases has prompted public health groups in La Crosse to unite again. The La Crosse County Department of Health, Gunderson Health System, and the Mayo Clinic have relaunched the Coulee COVID-19 Collaborative.
“We wanted to find a way to make the community aware that you need to take this seriously,” said Paula Silha, La Crosse County health education manager. “It’s not just something the Department of Health says. It is something that health care providers are experiencing as well. “
Over the past four weeks, COVID-19 cases have fallen from an average of 19 per week to 200 in the county, prompting a refocusing of efforts on mitigation strategies.
“We have seen a sharp increase in COVID cases, hospitalizations, over the past few weeks right here in the Coulee area,” said Meghan Buechel, infection prevention specialist. “It prompted us to really consider how can we get back to those COVID-19 basics that we really thought about when the pandemic started. “
The collaboration will meet every two weeks in the future to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on different sectors of the community.
