Haven Hub Shared Base – Two Limerick organisations, Haven Hub and Limerick Land Search Team, have brought together two permanent shared bases.

Two local suicide awareness organizations come together to open a shared permanent base of operations in Limerick City. The Haven Hub and Limerick Land Search Team have secured premises from Limerick City Council and County. However, the Limerick Community Mental Health Center building is badly damaged by fire and requires full construction work to make it operational.

The Haven Hub’s Director of Public Relations and Media, Pat Doran, said: “Since its inception, the Haven Hub has voraciously advocated the collaboration of all stakeholders in the suicide awareness space in Limerick. We are delighted to be working with the Limerick Land Search team in this joint initiative to open a Community Mental Health Center in Limerick. With Limerick having the highest suicide rate in the country, it is vitally important that the community is aware, first and foremost, of what we are doing. But also that they know where we are when they need us the most. We hope this project will reverse suicide rates in Limerick and be where we have the highest numbers when it comes to suicide prevention as opposed to completed suicides.

Leona O’Callaghan, Founder and President of the Haven Hub, added: “The Community Mental Health Hub initiative will allow us to continue to provide essential peer support to those most in need. But it will also give us a stable base of operations to deliver our wellness program. Courses such as WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan), QPR training, Decider Skills and Mental Health First Aid will be delivered free to the community from one location. Our Trauma Recovery Program as well as the Lads Shed Project are also run by the Haven and are currently offered in spaces that we rent. So the ability for us to have a permanent home will prove invaluable to the community.

Limerick Land Search Team Chairman Calvin Prendergast said: “We are delighted that the council has finally offered us premises and to be able to work alongside our colleagues at Haven Hub to provide two vital services to the Limerick community and beyond. It will be more than just a base for our unit, but a hub for the community where they can seek help. The next step is the renovation of the premises and over the next few months we hope that the people of Limerick will support the project and support our joint fundraising efforts to get the building up and running as soon as possible. The people of Limerick have always been good to ourselves and without them we would not be operating 9 years this year providing the service we provide and as always we are very grateful.

The two charities hosted an evening of fundraising entertainment at Fitzgerald’s Bar, Thomondgate on Friday August 19 from 6pm. Artists performing at night include Steve Spade, Rob & Rodigo, Greg Ryan, Sylvia Cregan and Kilkenny Mel. The karaoke will be hosted by Victor and the MC of the evening will be Leon Andersen.

Tickets are €10 at the door. All proceeds go towards the costs of rebuilding the building.

The Haven Hub also organized a GoFundMe to help with the costs associated with rebuilding the premises. If you can’t make it to the event, you may consider donating to the fundraiser which can be found online. HERE
