Spokane County is one of nine counties in Washington state enrolled in a free home COVID-19 test kit program.
Health officials are urging county residents to use the tests before visiting family, especially if they are not vaccinated.
Kira Lewis, a public health nurse with the Spokane Regional Health District, says home tests take about 10 minutes and could be taken on Thanksgiving or Christmas morning before heading to a family member’s home.
âMore community testing that is accessible to all members of the public helps people make good decisions about their social lives and their interactions with others,â she said. âIt’s important for the individual and it’s important for our community as a whole to move forward, continuing to have high transmission rates in our region. We need to respond to it with high rates of available testing. “
Testing is also available in Okanogan, Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties and is on a first come, first served basis. There are approximately 500,000 available statewide.
People can access the tests by going to sayyescovidhometest.org or by calling the state’s coronavirus hotline at (800) 525-0127, then pressing #.
Lewis said the tests may not be accepted by airlines or companies, which may require lab testing, but is a good option before heading to a reunion with family and friends.
